John Hennessy appointed as Alphabet’s New Board

Chairman

Alphabet appointed John L. Hennessy as the new board

chairman of the company. Hennessy has been on the

board since 2004 and Lead Independent Director since

2007.

He replaced Eric Schmidt.

Schmidt will remain as a “technical advisor” to

Alphabet.

Hennessy is a former president of Stanford University

and has had an extensive career in the tech industry.

Jerome H Powell Sworn In As 16th Chairman Of

Federal Reserve

Jerome H Powell was sworn in as the 16th Chairman of

the Federal Reserve for a four-year term.

 

He succeeded Janet Yellen, the first woman to lead the

US central bank in its 100-year history.

Powell was nominated for the post in November 2017

by President Donald Trump.

The oath was administered by Vice Chairman Randal K.

Quarles in the Boardroom.

Sweden Commits Record $370m Of Aid To UN World

Food Programme

Sweden and the United Nations World Food

Programme signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement

committing an unprecedented $370 million dollars to

WFP over the next four years.

The contribution for the period 2018-2021 is the biggest

ever made by a donor within a WFP Strategic

Partnership Agreement.

Bermuda Becomes first Country In World To Abolish

Same-Sex Marriage

Bermuda becomes the first country to legalize and then

repeal same-sex marriage. Bermuda’s governor John

Rankin approved a bill reversing the right of gay

couples to marry, despite a supreme court ruling last

year authorizing same-sex marriage.

 

China to reopen Nathula pass for Mansarovar yatris in

India

China agreed to reopen the Nathu La pass for Indian

pilgrims to undertake the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra,

Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh informed

the Lok Sabha.

China had closed the route last year citing

“unfavourable conditions”, at a time when India and

China were engaged in a military standoff at Doklam.

The four-month travel period to the Kailash

Mansarovar yatra starts from June.

Saudi Arabia temporarily bans poultry imports from

India over bird flu

Saudi Arabia has temporarily banned imports of

live birds, hatching eggs and chicks from India

after a form of bird flu that is highly lethal for

poultry was found in the south Asian country.

In January, India had reported an outbreak of a

highly contagious bird flu virus near Bengaluru in

the southern state of Karnataka.

Jacob Zuma Resigns As South Africa’s President

South Africa’s embattled President Jacob Zuma.

He announced the decision in a televised address

to the nation after the ruling African National

Congress (ANC) party threatened to eject him

from office via a parliamentary vote of no

confidence.

 

The 75-year-old, who was the country’s President

for the last 9 years, has been under increasing

pressure to give way to Deputy President Cyril

Ramaphosa, ANC’s new leader. Mr. Zuma’s

resignation followed weeks of intense public

pressure to step down amid long-standing

corruption allegations.

World’s First Autonomous Pods Unveiled In Dubai

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) launched

the first tests of the world’s first autonomous pods at

the World Government Summit.

The autonomous pods are launched in cooperation

with Next Future Transportation (US-Based) and are

designed to travel short and medium distances in

dedicated lanes.

They can be coupled together in as little 15 seconds or

detached depending on the riders’ destination in five

seconds.

 

Amazon Launches Its 1st Food Retail Service In India

Amazon becomes the first foreign e-commerce firm to

start its own food retail venture in India called Amazon

Retail, piloting its services in Pune.

It will reportedly be available on Amazon India platform

and sell locally made and packaged food to the

consumers directly.

Amazon also launched Amazon Now app, which

connects retailers with customers for sale of groceries.

Singapore To Impose Carbon Tax From 2019

Singapore will impose a ‘carbon tax’ from 2019 to cut

its greenhouse gas emissions and make companies

more competitive as global agreements on climate

change take effect.

Finance minister Heng Swee Keat stated that the tax

would be levied on all facilities producing 25,000

tonnes or more of greenhouse gas emissions a year.

The tax, to be applied to all sectors, will be Sg$5.0

($3.8) per tonne of greenhouse gas emissions from

2019 to 2023.

 

India Ranks 81st In Global Corruption Perception

Index

India ranked 81st in the global corruption perception

index for 2017, released by Transparency International,

which named the country among the “worst offenders”

in terms of graft and press freedom in the Asia Pacific

region.

The index ranks 180 countries and territories by their

perceived levels of public sector corruption. In the 2016

India was in the 79th place among 176 countries.

The index uses a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 is highly

corrupt and 100 is very clean.

In the latest ranking New Zealand and Denmark were

placed the highest, with scores of 89 and 88,

respectively.

On the other hand, Syria, Sudan and Somalia were

ranked lowest with scores of 14, 12 and 9, respectively.

Advertisement Policy 2018

Arunachal Pradesh gave a nod to much awaited

“Arunachal Pradesh Advertisement Policy 2018.”

 

State Cabinet headed by Chief Minister Pema Khandu

approved Arunachal Pradesh Advertisement Policy

2018 which will enable the government to make

payment of government advertisement bills to media

houses on a timely basis.

In another decision, the Cabinet approved the release

of gratuitous relief of Rs 2,000 for all contingency and

casual workers serving under Arunachal Government.

Apart from approving the creation of 25 posts of

Assistant Professors for government colleges of the

state under Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan

(RUSA), the Cabinet also approved enhancement of

salary of teachers working under SSA and RMSA on

contractual basis up to 22% with effect from April 1,

2018.

The Cabinet directed the education department to

ensure that salaries are disbursed by the first week of

the subsequent month through the Aadhaar-based DBT

through PFMS method.

The war cry of DASTAK is ‘Darwaja Khatkhatao, AES

aur JE ko bhagao’. In DASTAK campaign, whole state

machinery with the help of UNICEF will now literally go

door to door in 38 JES and AE affected districts which

South Central Railway Becomes 1st Rail Zone With

100% LED Lighting At Stations

The South Central Railway (SCR) become the first

railway zone in the country to complete 100%

LED lighting at all the stations under its

jurisdiction.

The SCR has been on the forefront of adopting

energy conservation measures.

It has attained the status of becoming the first

zone in the Indian Railways to complete 100%

LED lighting in all the 733 stations under its

jurisdiction.

NHAI to start Pilot Project named Pay As You Use

tolling system on Delhi to Mumbai National Highways

Pay as You Use’ tolling on the Delhi-Mumbai

Highway, for which bids are expected to be

submitted by February 26.

The pilot project involves implementing a satellite

based electronic toll collection system running on

GPS/GSM technology for around 500 commercial

 

vehicles on the Delhi-Mumbai National Highway.

The project will run for one year.

Central Government approves construction of over

1.86 lakh more houses under PMAY Urban

The central government has approved the

construction of over 1.86 lakh more houses under

the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) scheme,

taking the total number of affordable houses

sanctioned to over 39.25 lakhs.

The latest approvals under the Pradhan Mantri

Awas Yojana, PMAY (Urban), entailed an

investment of Rs 11,169 crores, with central

assistance of Rs 2,797 crores.

Haryana sanctioned the maximum number of

53,290 houses in this round of approval, followed

by Tamil Nadu 40,623 houses, Karnataka 32,656

houses and Gujarat 15,584 houses.

Union Minister Rajnath Singh Inaugurated First Of Its

Kind Spoken Sanskrit Centre

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh launched the

Centre for learning the Sanskrit language in

Gujarat University, Ahmedabad.

 

The center will offer a six-month course for

people on how to speak the language.

The coordinator of the course, Atul Ungar stated it

was possibly the first such course launched in

India.

Highway Capacity Manual

The Minister of Road Transport & Highways Mr

Nitin Gadkari released India’s first ever Highway

Capacity Manual (HCM) in New Delhi.

The manual is also known as Indo-HCM and it has

been developed by CSIR – CRRI on the basis of an

extensive, country-wide study of the traffic

characteristics on different categories of roads

like a single lane, two-lane, multi-lane urban

roads, and the associated intersections on these

roads.

Mumbai To Have India’s First Artificial Intelligence

Centre

In a first in the country, the Maharashtra government

will be setting up an institute for artificial intelligence

(AI) in Mumbai.

 

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will unveil the plan

for the institute during the Magnetic Maharashtra

Summit and at the Global Economic Conference in

Canada in March 2018.

develop sustainable management of water resources

It is necessary to study advanced technology and adopt

them for the betterment of our country Union Minister

for Water Resources Nitin Gadkari while addressing the

37th Annual General Meeting of the National Institute of

Hydrology Society.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari called on research

organizations to innovate in the area of water

conservation and sustainable management of water

resources.

He has stressed upon the need to study advanced

technologies and procedures like cloud bursting and

water accounting being used in other parts of the

world, and adopt those that are feasible for our

country.

The Minister further said that a lot of people and

organizations are doing very good work in this field,

and we need to network them on a single platform.

 

Many departments are doing the same kind of work to

achieve the same objective, but there is a lack of

proper coordination and information sharing among

them.

Taking note of this he suggested that a website should

be created for sharing available resources, information

and best practices available in different parts of the

country.

India to host first International Solar Alliance summit

India is going to host first International Solar Alliance

(ISA) summit in March 2018 in New Delhi.

It will be hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and

attended by leaders from over 50 member countries.

It will include French President Emmanuel Macron,

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Venezuelan

President Nicolas Maduro, and Bangladesh President

Abdul Hamid.

During the summit, two new programmes — on scaling

solar e-mobility.

 

Jaipur Gandhinagar Railway Station Becomes Fully

Women Operated Station

Gandhi Nagar railway station in Jaipur, Rajasthan

became railway station to be fully-managed by

women.

Gandhi Nagar is an important railway station in Jaipur

The station has a footfall of more than 7,000

passengers every day.

There are 40 women staff at the station beside women

India To Host 1st International Solar Alliance In March

2018

India will host the first International Solar Alliance (ISA)

summit on 11th March 2018. It will be attended by

French President Emmanuel Macron and United

Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The summit will be held in Delhi. The ISA aims to

launch 121 projects during the summit.

During the summit, two new programmes will be

inaugurated on- Scaling Solar E-Mobility and Storage,

Commerce Minister Kicks Off Consultations On The

New Industrial Policy

Commerce and Industries Minister Mr. Suresh Prabhu

set off a series of nation-wide consultations with the

Google and NCERT Join Hands To Teach Students

Digital Safety

Google and National Council of Educational Research

and Training (NCERT) signed a pact to integrate a

course on ‘Digital Citizenship and Safety’ in information

and communication technology curriculum.

It was signed on the occasion of Safer Internet Day

(06th February).

The curriculum developed by NCERT in collaboration

with Google will be used to train students from class I –

class XII across 1.4 million schools in India where they

will learn how to become good and responsible digital

citizens. The curriculum is spread into four themes –

being smart, being safe, being a digital citizen and being

future ready.

India Retains Top Spot As Source Market For Dubai In

2017

Dubai witnessed 15% growth in tourist arrivals

from India in 2017, hosting 2.1 million visitors,

retaining top spot as the source market.

 

It also became the first country to cross the 2

million mark in a single year, according to the

latest data published by Dubai’s Department of

Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai

Tourism).

The growth is mainly due to the success of Dubai

World’s Tallest Hotel ‘Gevora’ Opens In Dubai

The Gevora Hotel in Dubai, developed by the Al

Attar Group now become the “world’s tallest

hotel”. It stands 356 meters and 53 centimeters

tall.

It is one meter taller than the previous holder of

the title, the JW Marriott Marquis, in the same city.

The title has been confirmed by Guinness Book of

World Records.

India And Iran Signed Agreement For The Avoidance

Of Double Taxation

India and Iran signed an Agreement for the Avoidance

of Double Taxation (DTAA) and the Prevention of Fiscal

Evasion with respect to taxes on income.

The Agreement is on similar lines as entered into by

India with other countries.

The Agreement will stimulate the flow of investment,

technology and personnel from India to Iran & vice

versa, and will prevent double taxation.

 

It will improve transparency in tax matters and will

help curb tax evasion and tax avoidance.

PhonePe Partners With IOCL For Deployment Of PoS

Terminals

Digital payments entity PhonePe partnered with

Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) for the

adoption of its indigenously-designed Point of

Sale (POS) device at IOCL retail outlets.

As part of this partnership, customers can pay

using UPI, credit and debit cards, PhonePe wallet

and other external wallets like Jio Money &

Freecharge for their fuel purchases, through the

PoS device at 30 IOCL retail outlets in Bengaluru.

PNB Arm, IFC Tie Up To Raise $800 Mn For

Affordable Housing

PNB Housing Finance Ltd tied up with International

Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank

Group, to raise $800 million for green and affordable

housing in India.

IFC is in negotiations with two other housing finance

firms to invest another $150 million, as well as with

property developers to assist the Pradhan Mantri Awas

Yojana (PMAY) from both the demand and supply

sides.

Under PMAY, the government offers interest subsidy of

6.5% to economically weaker sections on their home

loans.

The scheme is for people with an annual income up to

Rs 3 lakh.

Telangana, Taiwan Sign MoU For Better Technology

The Telangana Government signed an MOU with

Games with 38 gold medals

Haryana youngsters outclassed others by achieving the

highest number of medal tally in the inaugural edition of

the Khelo India School Games.

The competition concluded in New Delhi.

gold medals, 26 silver medals, 38 Bronze medals.

Maharashtra (110) finished second overall while Delhi

Karnataka’s Kishan Gangolli won the 13th edition

The championship was organized by All India

The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs is

planning to introduce a ranking system for

National Sports Federations (NSFs).

This will be for the first time the Sports Ministry

will have a system by which sports federations

The rankings will be based on federations’

administrative capability, transparency,

talent-spotting ability, and medal count of

Tournament

In Boxing, MC Mary Kom stormed into the Finals of the

Strandja Memorial Tournament at Sofia in Bulgaria

while Vikas Krishan and two other male boxers entered

the semifinals.

In the Women’s 48 kg category, five-time world

champion and Olympic bronze medallist Mary Kom,

targeting her third successive international gold medal,

defeated China’s Ye Jiali to make the summit clash.
